The Serra de Tramuntana is a 90 km long mountain range that reaches the sea and presents a perfect symbiosis between the action of human beings and nature. For this reason it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2011.
The most practical way to go around it is through the Ma 10. From Palma, the easiest way is to take the motorway to Andratx, in the southwest of the island. From there, this road goes into the mountains bordering the coast and discovering spectacular landscapes. Estellencs and Banyalbufar are the first towns that the visitor finds. Two picturesque villages, which are configured on mountainous slopes surrounded by terraces that cover the land to use it as farmland. Both have beautiful coves with the typical “escars” (huts for fishermen’s boats with ramps to slide them to the sea).
After a winding stretch of road, you reach Valldemossa, probably the town with the most tourist attraction in the Serra de Tramuntana. It is recommended that you loose yourself in its narrow alleys of stone houses adorned with flowers and plants, as well as visit La Cartuja, the former Royal Palace later converted into a monastery, which welcomed Chopin and George Sand as guests. Just 10 km away is the idyllic town of Deià, a source of inspiration for musicians, painters and writers such as Robert Graves. In its surroundings it is worth stopping at the Na Foradada viewpoint and Son Marroig to enjoy unparalleled views.
The largest town in the Serra de Tramuntana is Sóller. Its modernist buildings, the monumental church of Sant Bartomeu, its centuries-old train and tram and the vibrant artistic and leisure life are its hallmarks. The tram connects the town with the port of Sóller, the largest natural refuge in the mountain range and an exceptional nautical and tourist center.
From there, you can take the Ma10 road towards Pollença. A meandering route of approximately 1 hour, of singular beauty, that allows you to discover one of the most interesting towns on the island. Pollença has an intense cultural life and has magnificent natural and heritage attractions. Among the former, the Es Colomer viewpoint stands out, as well as the Cape of Formentor with its coves and beaches with crystal clear waters. Among the latter, the Calvary stands out, an oratory of Templar origin which is reached by a great staircase of 365 steps, the Santo Domingo convent and the Pollença Museum.
