Mallorca has been a land of vineyards for centuries. Already in Roman writings there are references to the quality of Mallorcan wines. A great way to get to know and taste the wines of Mallorca is to visit its wineries, most of which organize guided tours, events or tasting and tasting experiences. The island has more than 80 wineries, with an exceptional variety of wines.
In Mallorca there are 2 Denominations of Origin: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant de Mallorca. The first includes mainly wineries in the municipalities of Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Binissalem, Sencelles and Santa Eugènia. It covers red, rosé, white and sparkling wines. They are made mainly with grapes of the native varieties Manto Negro and Moll. Red wines have a strong personality, well balanced and suitable for aging. White wines are delicate and fruity.
Binissalem’s traditional grape harvest festivities (Festes del Vermar) are deeply rooted and attractive, a lively celebration of the end of the grape harvest in mid-September.
The Denomination of Origin Pla i Llevant de Mallorca covers 14 wineries in the municipalities of Algaida, Ariany, Artà, Campos, Capdepera, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor, Maria de la Salut, Montuïri, Muro, Petra, Porreres, Sant Joan, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Margalida, Santanyí, Sineu and Vilafranca de Bonany. The wines made with the varieties Callet, Fogoneu, Tempranillo, Manto Negro, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir predominate; and with the white varieties: Chardonnay, Moll, Macabeo, Parellada, Moscatel and Riesling.
More than 470 hectares of land owned by 79 winegrowers.
Special mention should be made of the so-called Vi de la Terra, also protected by strict quality control. Those from the North Coast and Serra de Tramuntana are made with the white varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, the native Malvasía, Moscatel de Alejandria, Moscatel de grain menudo, Parellada, Moll and Sauvignon blanc, and with the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo.
The Vi de la Terra de Mallorca is a Protected Geographical Indication, with its own Regulatory Council, which encompasses 63 wineries.
